Introduction to 5 card draw poker
This is the Poker you see in the movies – 5 card draw action. It’s mostly played at home, when you have a Poker evening, but it’s not too popular in casinos and tournaments.
How does it work?
Five Card Draw poker consists of two rounds of betting - the max bet doubles after the first round of betting.
- 2-8 players can play at a time.
- Each player is dealt 5 cards
- Once all the players have contributed the same amount into the pot, they can exchange up to 5 cards to try and better their hands.
- To win finish with the best hand
Playing the game
Ready to play? To play Five Card Draw , you must have enough chips on the table to place an ante.
- The Players to the left of the Dealer begin the game by posting the blind bets. The Player on the Dealer's left posts a small blind, and the Player on the Small Blind's left posts a big blind bet. (The Dealer's position at the table changes after every game. The dealer-button shows the Dealer's position at the table.)
- Each player is dealt five cards – face down
- The first betting rounds starts and with your 5 cards you can either: Call, Raise or Fold
- Choose which cards you’d like to exchange in order to better your hand. The same number of cards is dealt according to the same number of cards that you’d like to exchange.
- The second and final round of betting begins. All active players can place a bet based on the new cards that they have received. The betting starts from the dealer’s left. Again, you can either: Call, Raise or Fold
- Now it gets interesting…showdown - everyone compares hands to determine the winner. The player with the highest hand wins the pot.

- Be cautious when selecting what hands to play. One common advice in a game of Five Card Draw is not to open a round of betting without a hand containing a high pair. The same advice concerning hand value applies when you are about to call someone else’s bet.
- In order to keep your opponents guessing, try to vary the number of cards that you draw. If you draw three cards. Normal assumption is that you have a pair and if you draw three cards or three of a kind when you draw two cards.
Glossary
- Blind – A “Blind" is placed by the Player to the Dealer's left. The "Big Blind" is placed by the Player left of the Small Blind.
- Draw – After the first round of betting, the players can choose which cards they’d like to exchange in order to improve their hand.
Showdown - A showdown follows after the second betting round if more than one player remains. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
